Balancing Schoolwork, Social Life, and Yourself

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

High school can mark some big changes in the amount of responsibility we acquire. Instead of 10 minutes of homework, we have many hours of homework. Don't worry I'm here to help you still have fun while taking care of yourself and your school work. Keep these tips in mind when your schedule gets busy.

  1. Prioritize Schoolwork: I don't want to sound like your parents, but this tip is true. Don't make the mistake of spending the whole weekend with your friends and then getting behind once you come to school. In high school, things move fast so it is important for you to get all of your work done and then have fun.

  2. Make a Schedule: By making your own schedule, you can see when your free time lies. Try to schedule time with your family, friends, and time to relax in those periods. Don't try to pack too much into one day.

  3. Don't Spread Yourself too Thin: If your friend group is the type that likes to hang out every day or every week, sometimes you can burn out. Take time to sit in front of the TV, play some basketball, nap, and relax. It's ok to not go to every single social event.

  4. Eat and Sleep Well: Sometimes, when people get stressed, they push themselves too hard and begin to eat and sleep poorly. However, doing this will only make you feel worse. Eating bad can make you feel sick and having at least 8 hours of sleep helped me tremendously in high school to wake up feeling energized and have an overall better day.

  5. Take Care of your Body: Adding onto the last tip, make sure to exercise at least a couple of days in the week. Exercising actually made me feel more energized and better about myself.
